What kind of electric bass should I get?

So my dad and I are thinking of selling his old bass, which I could probably get 350 for because it’s vintage. Should I get a Fender P or Jazz bass? Or should I save up and get a 800 dollar Gibson? I’m 14, and I play in a band, and we cover mainly alternative rock stuff, sometimes metal.
