tube fender install
What if I replace guitar amp tubes without re-biasing?

I have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with some cheap and awful sounding Chinese tubes currently installed, and I want to replace them, but do I have to have them biased? I know I should, but will it actually cause damage to the amp if I don’t?

Also, how difficult is it to bias them myself? I’m just trying to be as self-sufficient as possible so I can save some money.

David,

Be very careful tinkering in there. Even if you are going to try it yourself, the capacitors in those things have the potential to literally kill you.

Biasing is not that hard just dangerous. Just plan to take it in every time. They should be able to do it pretty quick.

But if you don’t bias, well everything should be just fine – although it might sound better if you had them biased, and it would likely improve the life of the tubes somewhat, it shouldn’t hurt the amp.

Good Luck,
John
