Whats the differnce between different electric guitars?

i have a fender starcaster that was about 200 in a package with a mini amp. Ive had tht for a year and now i want something of better quality. im looking to spend about $400 max but i dnt kno wat the difference between a $200 and $2000 guitar is so i dnt kno how to choose my next guitar. suggestions would be helpful too thanks

First try to define the type of music that you want to play, each guitar model have the unique sound/tone provide by guitar shape and the pickups (helps by the bridge). All parts used to build a guitar will increase its cost, better quality in most of cases give you better sound/precision and higher prices. The Neck on guitar could be bolt on (you have the bolts to hold the neck in place) or set on guitar body (no bolts), the bolt on has a lower price and normaly less precision on pitch (when you start play on neck the pitch is not in tuning trough the lengh of neck even after you adjust the neck rod). The tuning machine head give you the precision to tuning the strings and keep the tuning. The neck could be laminade or just one piece, in just one piece have a better vibration (and better tone) and cost more once the guitar builder needs to find a good and with no imperfection piece on wood to do the neck), the better the neck, better you can adjust the space between strings and neck and for sure, higher will be the price.
The pick ups could be passive or active, the active uses battery and will give you a high output sound plus some electronic EQ that works better that the passives. once again look for the type of sound that you are looking for, you can check on web sites about pick ups, normaly they have samples about pick ups sounds and you can find a wide price range but normaly a good quality pick up goes around 90.00 (with you have 2 installed on guitar will cost you around 200). The Bridge together with the neck will alow you to adjust the string closest possible from neck the will make you life easy when you have to play without buzzed the string on frets when you play it.
Depends on type of guitar’s configuration you can have a more flexbility to play differents music styles.
Once again , all those points together will make a guitar cost less or more, depend the quality of components that you are using and for sure, better sound and better play.
