les paul bass gibson
what are the differences between the different styles of electric guitars (styles listed)?

what are the differences between:

- gibson sg style
- strat style
- les paul goddess style
- jazz bass style
- elec les paul jr. style

and whcih one should i get if i am just a beginner?

If by ‘bass style’ you mean bass, then it’s a bass – 4 strings and a different thing altogether than a six string.

As for a beginner, any of the others will do. One would not necessarily be more difficult to play than the other, in terms of neck size, string clearance (or ‘action’) etc.

I would think offhand, the main differences is the body size, and weight of the guitar. And that you can only decide for yourself. See how it ‘fits’ you and think about how the strap feels on your shoulder.

When I bought my first guitar, it’s a higher end acoustic, and I was able to rent it for a month first. And knew for certain it wasn’t going back to the store.

You can try a guitar in a store, but trying it for 10 or 20 minutes, is better than nothing, but you don’t get that long term feel for it.

Another big difference in the guitars is the type of pick ups they have. Electric guitarists are always after a good tone. A single coil pick up like you find on a strat, responds and sounds differently than the humbuckers of a les paul.

Listen to ‘Sultans of Swing’ by Dire Straits and hear the nice single coil strat tone Mark Knopfler has going.

These are old songs, may not be your kind of music, but will give you an idea.

Of course there are pedals and distortion involved, so you won’t be finding a pure ‘dry’ tone. Angus Young from ACDC uses an SG.

The amp is an important part of your sound. Tubes give you a great tone, but are much more expensive. You’ll probably want one down the road if you are still into it.

One thing I would add, if you want to give it some consideration, it’s better to start with an acoustic and then go electric – but that’s a different question.
