Gibson SG vs. Gibson Melody Maker?

I am going to have 1,000 dollars to spend on a guitar. Should I go with the $379.00 dollar Gibson Melody Maker or the Gibson Faded SG for $579.00[both on Musician's Friend, SG on Clearence]. I am just geting out of the field of beginer and don’t want to make such a costly purchase blindly.

Well, personally I own a Gibson SG standard (paid $900 for it used) which I’ve had for two years and it’s an amazing guitar. Very nice action and an amazing sound. I’ve never played a melody maker, but for the most part you can’t go wrong with Gibson, they know guitars. I’d personally try both of them out at a local shop before I bought anything online.
