gibson melody maker pickups

Any guitar pros out there? I need advise please!?
Hello,
I am a learner-level guitar player, and I need some advice! I was passed down a 1967 Gibson melody maker, a very-small starter 5 watt amp, and a Boss DS-1 distortion petal.

It is completely stock, and is very worn; the knobs don’t hold the strings in tune at all, it has terrible hum, etc.
My question to you is this:
Should I take in the guitar and get it updated with new knobs, pickup, etc — and in turn destroy and value, be it dollars (~$1000), sentimental value, or “just because it’s cool to have”, or should I get an entirely new guitar and learn on a modern guitar?
Dependant on your answer: what would you recommend as a pickup/knobs/etc or guitar? I have never altered or actually purchased a guitar (as I said, hand-me-down), so I’m a virgin when it comes to this, which is why I ask for your wisdom!
Thanks a million in advance!
I would put the Melody Maker in the closet and hang onto it. In the long run, it might not be a good main guitar, and would probably be worth more to you as a collector’s piece which you play occasionally. Honestly speaking, a beginner probably would not appreciate the axe as much as an experienced player, even if it was completely restored.
Buy yourself a decent Strat or Gibson clone to learn on, keep the Melody Maker, and have it restored to its original state as time and funds permit. You need a playable instrument to learn on, but you shouldn’t feel pressure to decide the Melody Maker’s fate right now.
Make sense?
peace
