Help! i want to refinish a faded gibson les paul studio. is this a good way to do it?

i have one of those gibson les paul studio fadeds. i want to refinish the top in a transparent green and this is my plan… 1) sand the stain finish off the top of the body. 2) when it is back to the light colored wood, clean it and apply green tinted stain. 3) apply clearcoat. will this work? please help!!!!

sounds good but i would go with a polyurethane finish ,it will hold up much longer and be more durable.
