The Gibson SG, launched in 1961, was originally an enhanced version of the Les Paul, and took the name, although the designer of guitar blues legend Les Paul guitar that follows is called, did not like the way and refused to do so in their environment.

Gibson decided to continue the old Les Paul and change the name of the new guitarist of the SG, which means solid guitar. The Les Paul has been ongoing since 1952 and is still selling. The Secretary General has been launched to compete with Fender Stratocaster Gibson had tried to take the start in 1958 with little success Modernist series Explorer, Flying V and Modern.

He had a totally different style body, small, lightweight, thin, with two flat bevel and pointed horns. The neck was almost completely surrounded the body with a high collar. The mahogany body was still, as in the neck. The key is of ebony or rosewood. The Secretary General has been marketed as having the fastest neck in the world, since it broke almost from the body and has a very thin profile.

The options were to choose one, two or three humbuckers, one or two P-90. Most have no vibrato systems optional, but Gibson had designed some units. An unusual feature is the vibrato Gibson designed on the side, in which the notes were distorted by the player move arm from left to right instead of up and down. This was short lived.

When the Secretary General launched the most popular models available were the norm, Junior and personalized. The Secretary General was the cover of the soul of a Les Paul and "bat" shape pickguard. It was revised in 1966 and was equipped with a higher kicker and different mast union. Junior SG was similar to the Les Paul Junior in the concept-a cheaper version of the SG, while retaining the shape. The SG Custom was the top model range.

Some famous players include SG Angus Young of AC / DC, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath and Elliot Easton of the cars (which all had signature models dedicated to them) Eric Clapton (the Secretary General has been hand painted in a psychedelic pattern, as the Dutch art group El Loco) and Pete Townshend of The Who. Although not a regular user, Carlos Santana has also played an SG Woodstock festival.

The shape of the SG comes from the 1961-1963 Junior Gibson SG / Les Paul. This model, a version of the Les Paul Junior (a cheaper version of the Les Paul), had the same body shape that the Secretary General but were later with the striker Les Paul Junior. This model should not be confused with the SG junior.

Though Les Paul disapproved the form SG guitar and refused to have his name on it, Template signature was above the neck pickup until 1963.

The models available at the time of writing are standard, custom, special Angus Young Signature, 1961 Original Vintage Reissue Series models. In addition, the double neck Gibson EDS-1275 used by the famous Jimmy Page is based on the OS. Although General has always been a bit in the shadow of Les Paul won star status in the hands of many talented players.
