do you need an amplifier when you practice with an electrical guitar?

i thinking on practicing with gibson es175. i hear that you can practice without an amp. is that true? i wanna practice jazz.

Some amps have a headphone out for that very purpose. There are other ways of playing through headphones if you want amplification (I would think you would want it for Jazz). Vox makes a line of headphone amps for about $40 ea. They plug into your output jack and you plug your headphones into them, light, compact, inexpensive. For about $80 you can get a complete processor pre-amp from Waves iGTR (this is probably the best for what you’re doing). Check these out!
