How to paint on the pickguard of a guitar?

I am thinking of painting a design on the pickguard of my acoustic guitar like the gibsons (hummingbird etc.) how do I do it, what kind of paint should I use, what do I need to prepare it?

so far i have it that you buy real high quality spay paint and a good clear gloss or laqure
i’m doing lady bugs for my friends mom but the real problem is the stencils.
oh and do not use vinal. the plastic that is what most pickguards are made of it doesn’t hold paint. give me you out come please.
