first gibson les paul

Did Gibson Les Pauls or Fender Telecasters come first?
My friend says telecasters came before les pauls but werent they called something different?
Yes, Fender Telecasters were originally called Broadcasters. In early 1951, they started removing the “Broadcaster” decal from the headstocks in response to legal threats from Gretsch (who owned the trademark “BroadKaster”). Until the summer of 1951, the guitars bore no official name, and were later referred to as “Nocasters”. In the summer of 1951, they began the Telecaster name. Gibson Les Pauls (http://gibsonlespauls.com) were not introduced until 1952, so in any case, Telecasters came before Les Pauls.
