What kind of guitar should I expect?

Be different guitars give different sounds. I want something that sounds good and fair play without distortion. At first I wanted a Gibson SG, but was told it is best played with distortion. It is an Ibanez or a Gibson Les Paul sound good for playing clean or only a small amount of distortion. Since most of the music I play is stuff like Red Hot Chili Peppers Muse. Nothing heavy.
