fender vintage style

Question for John the saddle Guru or can anyone who can tell me how to…?
lace old style western fenders?
I have a vintage saddle but no laces on the fenders.
Do I need to use leather laces or can I use something else like string?
Pictures would be very helpful!
The other thing is …. is there a right or a wrong way to lace them and then what do you do when you have to adjust your stirrups?
Do you have to unlace the whole thing and start over or what?
Bottom line : HOW DO YOU DO THIS?!
Thanks!
The saddle is a vintage collectible that I bought from an internet saddle broker.
It came without laces and yes, I will be using it.
I think, perhaps, I am not explaining what I referred to correctly.
These would NOT be saddle strings on the front or rear of the saddle to tie your bed roll or what have you.
What I am referring to is the vintage style laced stirrup leather adjustment under the fenders.
Thanks to all who have answered so far.
If you do it right, you don’t have to totally unlace. Use leather laces. You can get them from some tack suppliers or Tandy. Place your fneders so the holes line up on the straps at the height you want your stirrups. Use four holes, two on each side. Starting on the horse side, lace the string so it lies flat and comes out the front of both holes equally. Then lace through the front strap[s]. Cross the laces and enter the lower two holes to the horse side. Cross them over each other, then wrap them once or better yet, twice, around the whole collection of straps, ending in front. Tie with a square knot. To undo, unlace down to the first set of holes and adjust, then relace. It takes longer, which is why Blevins Buckles were created.
