Fender Squier tone/volume knobs?

I bought a used Fender Squier and the tone/volume knobs need to be cleaned. I’m just not entirely sure how to get them off to clean them. Do I have to take the pickguard off, or do they just pop off?

For the strat type guitar, they pop off.

For the telecaster type — I think they pop off. Now, I have to go home and look to see for sure, or if there is a set-screw. Or, I might be thinking of my bass, too.
