I need a guitar?

I have been playing the guitar for wile now and I was thinking of buying a new electric but I know almost nothing about electric having only ever played acoustics and don’t want to get played by some sails man so here a few of my question. I was thinking of spending something from the $600-$300 range
1. What is the difference between a Telecaster and a Stratocaster
2. Is a whammy bar a waste of money
3. Was looking at the Fender® Highway One Telecaster Electric Guitar but don’t want to spend that much money what is a equal guitar
4. Any other guitar reviews would be welcome

1. What is the difference between a Telecaster and a Stratocaster

Tele has two pick ups, a volume and one tone, a 3-way switch and fixed bridge while the strat has 3 pick ups. a volume 2 tones, a 5 way switch and a floating bridge.

That is the technical explanation. The more general is that teles show up in the hands of players of country and traditional rock while strats seem to show up more for metal, rock and roll and Blues.

Tele: Springsteen, Frank Black, James Burton, Albert Collins, Steve Cropper, vince Gill, Waylon Jennings, Keith Richards.

Strat: Richie Sambora, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Buddy Holly, Robert Cray, John Frusciante, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer, Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray Vaughan

2. Is a whammy bar a waste of money

Whammy bar is a matter of taste. There are loads of people that never use them and others that use them all the time.

There is not much out there that is that good of a value that is made in America. How about the Mexican made standards. I think they are a better value, although they are not made in America so they may not hold value as well, but if you are looking for a good player, standards should do you.

Epiphone is a very nice line of Gibson made economy guitars, but I do not have nearly the experience with them.

Someone suggested going and playing some guitars. That is really the key to this whole thing. You have to sit and play it for a while and get comfortable. go to a shop and tell them that you want a small room with a simple amp in it and a few guitars to try out. If they do not set you up and leave you alone for an hour or so, find another shop. Do not try to play 20 guitars in 30 minutes in the main room with people walking around, get in a small room with an amp where you can really play.

Also ask about any used american fenders they might have, you might get lucky.
