fender squier bass
Why does a Squier Jazz Bass sound different than a Fender (Standard) Jazz Bass?

when i say different,i mean worse.squiers sound ok..,but fenders sound really good.why is that?i changed my squier’s strings, and it sounds alittle better, but the fenders sound so much better neways.can some1 tell me why?thanks

It’s true, the woods and materials are not of the same quality on the Chinese and Korean made Squiers.

There is a solution!

Save up and buy some NICE pickups. Maybe you can find some used Bartollini’s on eBay. They make killer bass pups. If too expensive, try Seymore Duncan or even some American made Fender pups.

I would also replace the output jack with a “Switchcraft” high quality jack. Those cheap ones they use will fail within a couple years.

I would also upgrade the volume and tone pots. These upgrades will improve your tone a LOT!

You might want to upgrade the tuners to some Fenders. It will just work better.

Lastly, some of the tone is the frets. If they are not true, you will lose tone. They need to be nicely crowned to articulate clearly, and need to be level. I have found this to be one of the shortcomings of Squires, and cheap instruments in general. But a fret-leveling is expensive, as much as the bass in some cases.

I was a Fender repair Tech here in America for 15 years, sorry I can’t do it for you!
