Can I put marshalls in a fender amp?

I’ve got a Fender 212R 100watt combo amp. Someone recently gave me a set of 4 Marshall G12-412MG celestion speakers… I’m guessing for a 4×12 cab. Would it be possible (and productful) to take out the 2 12 speakers in my fender and put in 2 of the celestion speakers? What I mean by productful is I don’t want to do something that’s going to mess up the sound worse, as of course, I’d only be doing it for better sound.

The other option is to save up money (someone just gave me the marshalls, I know right, they’re like 100 bucks a piece!) for an empty cab, which goes for like 100 something dollars… even then I might need a head for it because my current amp is a combo.

Also, related to the main question, would doing such a job be difficult? I know a little bit about doing that kind of thing, but not enough to say I’m comfortable winging it. The back of the Fender 212R is completely open, so getting the speakers out shouldn’t be a problem.

Thanks for the help!

I did a little checking on the web, it seems that the Marshall 412 cabinet is rated at 120 watts. The speakers G12 speakers are rated at 30 watts each. There are higher wattage G12′s…they will have a rating on them. You have to make sure that the ohms and watt ratings are the same as the Fender speakers. If your G12′s came out of a Marshall 412 cabinet, my guess is that only 2 of them don’t have the muscle to handle the Fender’s 100 watts. Depending on the ohms and the way you wire them (series or parallel) you may be able to match the power rating but you have to ask yourself…….why?

The Fender has decent speakers that are designed to sound good with that cabinet. It’s not like Celestions are some incredibly sough-after upgrade. In a lot of circles, Celestions are considered run-of-the-mill. If you want a true upgrade, look at some heavy duty EV speakers.

What might make sense is to build a 412 cabinet. It’s not rocket science, just basic high school shop class carpentry. Get some plywood and grille cloth. Read a little about how the wiring affects the impedance and power handling: http://www.bcae1.com/spkrmlti.htm

Bottom line: The Celestions aren’t an upgrade to your Fender….don’t fix it if it ain’t broke. Use the Celestions for some other project…build a 412 cabinet or some stage monitors.
