Project guitar Set Up Help?

I want to know a good setup for a guitar. I plan on making a project guitar, and working on it slowly. I will buy a guitar for around $250, and modify the parts to make it amazing. What is a good guitar to do this? And tell me if this sounds like a good idea. I might buy an Squier Affinity Stratocastor, put some Seymour Duncan Cool Rails in it, buy a fender strat neck, and then put some new wiring into it. What tuners should I get, and does that sound like a good deal? Thanks

Hello, James! I would suggest you start with a decent pre-owned MIM Stratocaster for $250 to $350 (Craig’s List, eBay, etc.). You would not need to mess with the neck, and can focus on upgrades to the pickups (which may include switching to 500K potentiometers, $5 each), the bridge (Wilkinson-style at http://www.wdmusic.com/wilkinson_contemporary_5_1_hole_tremolo_chrome.html ), Schaller-style locking machine tuners ($60 to $80, http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,_solid_peghead_tuners/Schaller_Tuners/Schaller_Locking_Guitar_Machines.html and http://cgi.ebay.com/Genuine-Fender-Schaller-Locking-Tuners-for-Strat-Tele_W0QQitemZ310169776655QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar_Accessories?hash=item48378f320f&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 ) , Graph Tech nut ($8, http://www.graphtech.com/products.html?CategoryID=5 and http://www.guitarsplususa.com/nuts.shtml ), pickguard and dress-up pieces ($50), and even repaint the body ($150 from http://guitarpaintguys.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=4777894 , or learn how to do it yourself for less at http://www.reranch.com/101a.htm ) or apply a unique appliqué ( http://www.axewraps.com ). Building a project guitar on a Standard Stratocaster base (rather than Squier by Fender) will give you more compatibility in parts selection, plus make the guitar more desirable should you ever decide to sell. Best wishes for success with your project! Best regards, Dana
