fender jazz bass question?

ive seen a lot of fender basses with thumbrests below the pickups, why is it down there when a right handed player would rest there thumb above the pickups

back in the 50′s and early ’60′s, most bass players played with their thumb, so it was a “finger rest” at that time.
as bass players switched to their fingers, they moved it up, as a thumb rest
