fender jazz 5 string bass

Fender bass guitars ?
Ok I am looking at 2 fender bass guitars. 1st the Fender deluxe active jass bass V 5 string and the 2nd is the Fender american series jass bass V 5string. The first lists for around $650 and the second for around $1,200 I am wondering what the major difference is between the two other than the look and shape.

Ok, first off, if you are buying instruments in this price range, make sure you’ve shopped around, and, MAKE SURE YOU PLAY ON THEM FIRST!!!!! Really, thats the best way to go about this, mostly because the basses are going to have very different sounds, (I’ll get to that in a moment) as well as play differently. Decide what you like personally. Also, if this is your first bass (I assume that it isn’t) you should probably be looking at 4 strings.
As for differences, The 2nd has active pickups, (powered) that aren’t labeled as noise canceling. Personally, I think thats a good thing. Also, the higher end bass has more versitle electronics, and a string through bridge. This should provide a wider range of music that you can play, and I think that a through bridge has several benefits. (Resonance, better tension on strings, use longer strings, ect.) All in all, most aspects of the more expensive guitar are just a step above the 1st guitar. Really, though, make sure this is your final choice.
All in all the fender jazz are great basses, but you do get what you pay for, both in sound and durability, so the extra 1000 is not just to make the instrument pretty. Anyway, play on them, then decide.
