I bought my first Fender Strat (highway one 2006) a couple months ago and love it. I have had a Mexican strat (garbage – frets way too small and electronics suck), Epi Les Paul, Epi SG and this one puts them all to shame. I also currently have a Gibson Les Paul Studio. The SG was trash and buzzed alot on the frets (action was adjusted and had to be very high to avoid buzzing). Both had poor action and low frets. When I tried the Strat I was amazed. The action was low with only slight buzzing. I changed from 9s to 10s and never looked back. BUT!!!! keep in mind that the pickups are way different. If you want a clean sound, go with the strat. IF you want compelte insane metal , the strat will do with rediculous amounts of gain etc but definitely sounds different. AND THIS IS MAJOR – the Fender uses a 25.5″ scale (string length is 25.5″) . I never mesured the Epi guitars but if it is like my Gibson LP, the scale is 24.75″. Therefore, the sting length is longer and you will have to pull the strings tighter to reach the same pitch. It will feel VERY tight at first. Once the strings settle in and you get used to it, it will feel great (did for me at least). ALSO, THE NECK IS VERY DIFFERENT. It feels VERY small and thin. The width is OK but the thickness takes some getting used to (C shape). This took me a few weeks and have NEVER looked back. I hardly use my Gibson LP anymore and the Epi LP and SG was only passing memories sold off to finance the 18 Watt amp I have (strat sounds amazing with this amp). The Fender will run about $200 more but worth it. I admit, the Epi LP looks better built and has a better finish (that is what suckered me in) but I have seen the light. Praise be to Leo. Hope this helps.
