How do I open my electric guitar without removing the strings?

I need to work on the wiring inside of the guitar, but my idiot brother decided to restring it and tune it without asking me first, then cut the strings. I understand he meant well, but that’s not the point. The point is that since he cut the strings, it’ll be near impossible to put them back on if I remove them.Is it possible to just release the tension by de-tuning the stings, then removing the bridge so I can remove the pickguard and get to the wiring. If it helps, I’m using a mid 80s Fender Squire Bullet.

Hello there,

There are instances with I am working on a guitar that I do not remove the strings. I do not recommend that method, but you can do it.

If your Bullet has a fixed bridge (not a tremolo), and is a top loader, you can take the screws out that hold the bridge. Put the bridge up and the strings will follow. You can move it to the side. If you have a string thru fixed bridge (some of the 80s Bullet hard tails did, you cannot do that. If you have a tremolo, you remove the spring cover plate on the back side. 6 screws hold it. You should loosen the tension on the strings. Then remove the tremolo springs from the bridge block. That will free the bridge to come up. Then remove the 6 screws that hold the bridge. It should come up freely. Move it to the side and you can get at the pickguard. I presume you know how to proceed from that point.

One note, the strings tend to get tangled. Also be careful not to put a kink in a string while you have them pulled aside.
