Pickups For Stratocaster?

I have an eric johnson signature strat (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Eric-Johnson-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar?sku=511311) and the guitar is great but it needs some new pickups because of serious humming issues. I want it to be a little heavier and more metal sounding.

I was thinking about getting a different pickguard and getting one humbucker and one pickup or something along those lines.

Does anyone have any suggestions? thank you!

I will pick a best answer. :)

Yep, those single coil pickups do have hum problems, but on the other hand there’s nothing quite like the sound of a Strat or Telecaster. New single coil pickups aren’t going to solve the hum problem, so you’re on the right track with a humbucker.
What you might want to consider is a stacked humbucker. They look like a regular single coil pickup so you wouldn’t have to change your pickguard although you may need to route the pickup opening out a little to accomodate the extra depth.
Here’s an example, but of course do your homework to find out which of these pickups is designed for the sound you want.

I’d recommend having a guitar technician do the mod.
