Electric Guitars? Gibson Epiphone? Fender Strats? new pads?

I am looking to buy a new guitar soon, perhaps outside eBay. I think that to make a Gibson Epiphone Les Paul for about $ 800 and wonder what people thought about this, or go with a Fender Stratocaster that was what I thought too? I have also heard a lot about the people who buy guitars and microphones to better better and things like that, but I do not really understand everything.
