question for female guitarists?

I need an opinion. My boyfriend seems to have trouble with me playing the guitar. I’ve been a guitarist since high school and since then never actually been apart with my axe. The only thing is that I play the Gibson X-Plorer and technically it kinda intimidate him. From the way he looks at me when I hold it, somehow he thinks that its ‘un-girlie’ and gave me reasons such as ‘you will spend more time with your axe than with me’. I have guy friends that plays guitars and its cool and everything but when a girl play it, it started to become an issue! my fave guitarist is Allison Robertson of The Donnas and she kinda inspired me to learn more techniques on the frets. I just want him to support me on my love for the guitar and stop giving me that ‘oh you play the x-plorer, that’s kinda of a turn off ungirlie like’ look! he listens to hip hop, and I’m not much of a hip hop fan cuz I love rock music.

If he’s worried that you will spend more time with your axe then with him, then you could get him involved. Ask him if he would like you to teach him how to play guitar. As for the whole “Un-girlie” thing, thats something that he has stuck in his mind, that all women should be into barbie doll’s and read girlie magazines, not play guitar.
And seeing as he likes hip hop the whole idea of a woman being girlie and dressing with 20% clothes 80% skin is always going to be drummed into his head.
My advice is to try and get him involved. Ask him if he would like to learn how to play. That way you are spending time with both.
