Is it safe to add a thumb rest to my bass guitar?

I just bought a fender 51 precision bass and I can’t rest my thumb on the pickup. The pickup doesnt stick out far enough. I was wondering would drilling 2 holes to add a thumb rest affect the sound? Also, is there a chance that I would drill a hole and hit a wire or part of the electronics?

it shouldn’t affect then sound at all really. if you drill into the body above the pickup there really wouldn’t be any wiring concerns. you might try epoxy to attach a thumb rest, if you’re worried about keeping it as original as you can if it’s actually a 1951 p-bass. in that case i would get another pickguard and attach the rest to that one and put the original one away
